“He's Just Not That Into You” actor starts Pride Awareness Month

Actor Wilson Cruz will be at the Arrendondo Café in the Reitz Union tonight at 7 to kick off Pride Awareness Month.

Cruz, who is known for his recent role in “He’s Just Not That into You,” is an advocate for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer community. The event is co-sponsored by Accent.

“He’s an excellent advocate and star for the community,” Ricky Carter, co-marketing director for the program, said.

UF’s Pride Student Union will celebrate self-expression and acceptance at its 10th annual Pride Awareness Month in April.

More than 25 events are scheduled, including an amateur drag show and a queer ball.

Carter hopes people will learn about their community and ultimately stop stereotyping it. He said people don’t realize a choice of words may offend close friends or family members struggling with their sexual orientation.

About $25,000 was spent on the month’s events. The program’s events are free and open to the public.
