GPD makes rare panhandling arrest

A 59-year-old man joined just a few others who have been arrested for violating Gainesville's seven-month-old ban on panhandling Friday afternoon.

According to a Gainesville Police Department arrest report, James Mozer was seen accepting a hand-to-hand $1 donation from someone in a Ford F-150 who was stopped at a red light on University Avenue near 13th Street around 1 p.m.

Mozer had been holding a handmade cardboard sign that read, "Homeless Vet - Please Help!! Bless You!," according to the report.

Mozer told a police officer he was not panhandling, but according the report, a $1 bill and between $2 and $3 in change were found in his pants pocket.

He was charged with panhandling on public property, a misdemeanor, and remains at the Alachua County Jail.
