I find Will Penman’s Wednesday column urging conservatives to move on absurd. If you, Will, are going to write against your ideological archrivals, please make some attempt to understand them. May I do some explaining?
The health care bill itself clearly is not going to cause the downfall of America. Instead, America’s downfall will be due to a much longer-running, further-reaching issue: a creeping sense of entitlement. We the people seem to believe more and more that everyone is entitled to this and that whether they care to work for it or not.
If this trend is not halted, it will cause America’s downfall. Our nation will not cease to exist but will simply fall into mediocrity.
I believe in American exceptionalism. I believe that America is — or recently was — the best country on Earth. I would like to continue this belief. I would like to remain proud that I am an American.
Will, maybe you disagree with American exceptionalism. Maybe you think America should be just like the European countries
you mention. Maybe you think a sense of entitlement will not decrease personal responsibility and vigor. There are plenty of opportunities for you and me to respectfully disagree. Brash vilification based on a friend’s Facebook status is not one of them.
