When life gives you lemons: Blow off some steam and relax

It’s been about a month since classes started, and my energy levels are almost down to zero. I’m sure a lot of you are feeling the same way. From back-to-back classes, club meetings, interviews, studying and assignments, it’s hard for us Florida Gators to rejuvenate over the weekends when, of course, we are inundated with chapters to read.

Relaxing sounds like an easy fix, yet we still walk around campus like zombies. Here are some easy, effective ways to relax so your mind and body are in sync:

Get sleep

Sleeping for six to eight hours each night is difficult when you’re a college student. We’re natural night owls. When we are finished with our studying for the day, we want to spend the rest of our time hanging out with our friends. Make it a habit to get at least six hours of sleep every night. Sleep and mood are related. The less you sleep, the more likely you are to become stressed, and the less productive you will be. It’s simple. Go to sleep! Take power naps.

Eat healthy

It’s hard to avoid greasy snacks when you have so many delicious (and unhealthy) options on campus. Try going on a “grease detox”! Avoid eating sugary and fried foods. You’ll see your energy levels rise, and you’ll feel a lot more energized.

Exercise

Working out is one of the best ways to relax. Get your mind off of things, and focus on your body for an hour each day. Endorphins are our best friends.

Find a hobby (with a friend)

Some people like to have “me time” and relax alone, whereas others love to relax with company. Regardless of your preference, find a hobby. Go roller blading, take a cooking class, or explore your town. You can do it on your own or with a friend!

Try out one or all of these tips this week. You’ll bounce back next week more relaxed than ever!
