The chomp: Frozen meals for the overworked undergrad

If you don't feel like cooking, frozen meals are a lifesaver. Many people think frozen meals taste disgusting or are very unhealthy, but I’m here to tell you today that this is not true!

Although a frozen meal will never be as healthy as a home-cooked one, and there are a few brands to steer clear from, there are many options for the tired and hungry college student that taste good and are actually pretty healthy. Sometimes, a frozen meal is just the thing to indulge in when you don’t feel like breaking out the pots and pans!

Trader Joe's has a large variety of awesome frozen dinners that make cooking fast, easy and delicious. The Indian cuisine frozen meals in Trader Joe's are well known for being yummy and inexpensive. It also carries a wide variety of frozen pizza dinners that are much more than just your average pepperoni or cheese. The Trader Joe's butternut squash and spinach personal pizza is a healthy alternative to regular pizza while still being delicious!

There are also many frozen food brands that cater to vegetarian lifestyles. I’m not a vegetarian, but sometimes the idea of eating meat that’s been frozen for a long time can sound distasteful. Vegetarian frozen meals are a lifesaver! Amy’s Kitchen, for example, has many different frozen meals, often vegetarian, which are healthy and full of different options like pesto pasta, lasagna and vegetables and rice. Annie’s frozen meals are about $4 to $5 and are extremely easy to make; just heat in the microwave until cooked!

If you are looking for something more substantial, perhaps with chicken or beef for protein, Birds Eye frozen meals are the ones for you. The Birds Eye Company “Voila” frozen food division markets easy pre-made recipes that can take less than 10 minutes to go from the skillet to your plate! These dinners range from beef lo mein to chicken alfredo and serve two to three people; easy to make when you are pressed for time and extremely tasty!

When you’re tired, and there are exams looming in the future, cooking can be an exhausting chore. Frozen meals help you stay full, energized and ready to take on your next assignment.
