After capturing a Southeastern Conference championship and its most tournament wins since 2004, the Florida men’s golf team again fizzled out when it mattered most.
The No. 6 Gators shot a combined 44-over through three rounds at the NCAA Championships to finish 23rd, 15 spots out of the match-play portion.
“I think we got so caught up in the possibilities that we forgot to play golf,” UF coach Buddy Alexander said. “It’s disappointing because we are a lot better team than we showed.”
Yet again, Florida failed to advance to match play after entering the NCAAs as a favorite. Augusta State defeated Georgia 3-2 to win a second consecutive title.
Senior Bank Vongvanij, who was named a PING First-Team All- American on Monday, finished his career at UF with a 13th-place showing after closing with a 1-under 71.
“We’ve had a good year and you don’t want to let one tournament diminish what you’ve done all season long,” Alexander said. “From that standpoint, I’m proud of these kids.”
