Summer is here, which means one thing: a new wardrobe! When I think of a summer wardrobe, I think of short denim shorts, tank tops and of course, flip flops. However, this image of “summer style” has been shelved this season.

Shopping for a summer wardrobe has been a bit overwhelming this year. There are so many patterns, colors, textures and prints to choose from that it’s difficult to determine how create an outfit from all the options. Don’t sweat it! When working with any item of clothing, you just need to remember to balance out everything. Don’t base what you buy on whether you think it matches anything or not. Grab that item that you’d never usually pick up and wear it with your head held high. Throw that questionable piece with a neutral piece and a cute pair of shoes and you’re good to go.

Focus on colors. When your colors go together or match, the prints will work together. Your “wild card” piece doesn’t always have to be an item of clothing, this could be shoes, a necklace, a funky hat, it could be anything really.

Another thing to remember while looking at all of these crazy prints is the simplicity of the piece itself. You can wear prints together, you just need to play with the colors in the prints and what the prints are. For example, a plain striped piece of clothing is easier to pair with another print because stripes aren’t a really busy print. On the other hand, if you have a colorful paisley print, that might be a little harder to pair another print with, in this case, you would throw in a neutral piece.

For the summer season, I live in racer back tank tops. I own several different colors, and use these tank tops as my neutral piece. This allows me to have a little fun with the rest of my outfit.

Find pieces that express who you are. If you love what you’re wearing and how it makes you look, I say go for it. You have to feel beautiful in your own skin, not anyone else. Remember this simple formula: a piece you love + a piece you like (your neutral piece) = one fabulous outfit.
