Protecting Personal Items
Don’t let mail build up. Don’t let newspapers build up. Close your blinds.
Leave a porch light on.
Try to do things that give the appearance that someone is home.
Don’t leave valuable items in plain sight.
Lock your doors.
If you’re not taking your valuables with you, make sure they are locked up.
While traveling, if it’s not convenient to take with you, put items in hotel safes.
Put bicycles in a well-lit, populated area.
Park your bike in the racks right outside dorms and outside the University Police Department.
Always use a U-lock device instead of a cable lock, which can easily be cut.
Make sure you don’t leave your keys in your scooter.
Safe Sex
If you’re going to engage in sexual activity, know your limits.
Consent has to be a clear, unambiguous “yes.”
You can’t give consent when you’re intoxicated.
People need to be clear when consent can be given, taken away and when it doesn’t apply.
If you are the victim of a crime, there are a lot of people you can talk to. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the police. Reach out to victim advocacy groups.
Staying Safe
Do not drink and drive.
Guard your drinks — both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
Do not go home with a stranger.
Do not walk alone at night.
Inform others of your plans.
Skincare
Put on sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher with UVA and UVB protection.
Reapply sunscreen after swimming and excessive sweating.
Seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
Cover up with clothing and sunglasses.
Avoid using tanning beds and sun lamps.
Put on insect repellent with DEET or Picaridin.
