Students had the opportunity to voice their opinions to Student Government senators Friday afternoon. For the first time, it wasn’t at a Senate meeting.
SG hosted its first "Meet Your Senator Day" on the Plaza of the Americas. The event allowed students to meet the senators who represent UF’s districts.
But the group didn’t speak with as many students as they had hoped, said Sen. Anthony Black (District D, Access).
"It’s hard because it’s finals," he said.
He said he talked to a few students about what SG does and addressed their concerns, like the low number of on-campus buses.
"I think it’s important to engage with the people you represent," Black said. "You’re supposed to represent a larger population."
Black said he wants to do the event again in the Spring when more students might be able to attend.
Alejandro Guerra, a UF political science freshman, wrote in an email he attended to learn more about SG.
While Guerra, 19, didn’t meet his senator for the Yulee Area, he said he met Sen. Audrey Guerra (Liberal Arts and Sciences, Access) and Sen. Nardin Derias (Agriculture, Access). They told him what senators do and the committees they were on.
"I thought the event was great," Guerra said.
Sen. Austin Champoux (District A, Impact) said he talked to students about SG’s initiatives.
"I really want to hear the students’ voices," he said.
