The Santa Fe College Student Senate debated Wednesday evening whether to approve a nearly $2,000 overflow request from the Global Society club.
Club president Kayla Caniff pitched the proposal to the chamber, saying the club needs funds to travel to Chicago for a national Model United Nations conference in April.
Of the $1,965 requested from the Student Government’s overflow budget, Caniff said the money would go toward covering registration and hotel fees.
The club won awards at previous conferences and Caniff said they hoped to win more awards at this meeting, where they’ll compete against Ivy League schools.
Sen. Aaron Gabriel said he didn’t have any concerns about the request.
“Honestly, it seems like they really need it,” he said.
Benjamin Myers, the recruitment and training director, expressed a similar opinion.
“I have zero reservations about this,” he said.
After two minutes of open discussion between the club and senators, the chamber voted overwhelmingly to approve the overflow request. Student Body President Conor Flynn also said SG began polling students for their opinions about the use of tobacco on campus.
Additionally, he said progress was made on a resolution the chamber passed last year to restrict e-cigarettes to smoking pits.
