Miguel Cardona, a 23-year-old UF architecture senior, won first place in the University of Florida’s International Center’s 2015 Global Culture Photo contest with this photo of a woman in Sayulita, Mexico.

Miguel Cardona snapped an award-winning photo when he asked for directions in Sayulita, Mexico.

The UF architecture senior studied abroad in Mexico last summer. This week, his first-place photograph of a local woman hanging in her woven hammock is featured in Grinter Hall as part of International Education Week, a federal holiday started 15 years ago by the U.S. State Department and Department of Education.

The week’s exhibits feature photos from both students and faculty, said UF International Center Outreach and Communications Coordinator Mabel Cardec.

Those whose photos were selected had their photos printed, framed and hung on the first floor of Grinter Hall.

Cardona, 23, said he took the photo, titled "Passing Time in Sayulitas," quickly.

"It looked like she belonged in that space, with how her dress matches the border of the window and she is sitting in the middle of the hammock," he said.

UF sociology professor Stephen Perz, who received the International Education Award from the UF International Center this week, said UF has a proven track record for providing quality study abroad opportunities.

"Traveling to other countries of course provides a new perspective on one’s home country," Perz said, "and interacting with people from many countries has a similar effect, no matter where you are at the moment."
