Santa Fe College (5-2) conquered the Conquistadors of Pasco-Hernando Community College on Friday.

During the 6-5 victory, Saints sophomore Trace Venegas had a single and a double. Although SFC had 13 hits in the game, the Saints hit into five double plays and had difficulty clearing the bases.

"We missed so many opportunities throughout the game," SFC coach Johnny Wiggs said. "We have to get better at hitting with guys in scoring position."

After Friday's win, the Saints split a doubleheader against Indian River State College on Saturday. The Saints won the first game 3-2 but IRSC smashed SFC in the second game 7-2.

"It's always difficult to win a doubleheader, especially against a great team like Indian River," Wiggs said. "This is why we play (doubleheaders) early."

In Game 1, starting pitcher Stephen Adkins notched six strikeouts and gave up only seven hits. Fellow Saints pitcher Andy Mee was given a save for the game. Mee won the game for SFC with his two RBIs in the bottom of the third, giving the Saints a one-run advantage.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Saints were unable to obtain a hit until the sixth inning. IRSC took the lead in the top of the third, and the Saints were never able to bounce back.

Wiggs has faith in his team and has no doubt they will continue strong throughout the season.

"It's good to play a lot of close games. This way you can see different situations early in the season," Wiggs said.

SFC will travel to Tampa on Wednesday to play Hillsborough Community College. The Saints' next home game is Friday against Gulf Coast Community College at 3 p.m.
