Federal judge grants injunction to four groups, including UF College Libertarians

After hearing arguments Tuesday in Gainesville, a federal judge granted an injunction Wednesday evening on a Florida campaign finance law that regulates political speech.

Four groups, including UF College Libertarians, filed a lawsuit earlier this month stating the Florida electioneering communications law infringes on their rights to free speech.

The law required groups to register with the state and disclose income and expenditures if they spend money to comment on political candidates or ballot issues.

With the injunction granted, the law will not be enforced until a future court case determines whether it is constitutional.

Bert Gall, an attorney for the Institute for Justice who argued against the law Tuesday, said he hoped a final decision would be made by early 2009.

Gall said he was pleased the decision on the injunction came quickly.

"The injunction was granted in time for all our clients to be able to speak before the election," he said.
