See the Florida Museum of Natural History come alive in a new way at the first SciArt Showcase to open Friday.

SciArt Showcase is a culmination gallery of works by artists who convened at the 2018 SciArt Meetups and were inspired to make art based on exhibits at the Florida Museum and the state’s nature and culture.

The upcoming exhibition will feature paintings, drawings, ceramics, film, photography and digital media created by an array of 20 artists from UF and the Gainesville community. Artworks by UF forest entomology associate professor Jiri Hulcr and renowned Gainesville-based artist Margaret Ross Tolbert will be featured.

Opening reception for the exhibition will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Feb. 8 at the Santa Fe College Art Gallery. The event is free and open to public with food and beverages provided.

The Santa Fe College Art Gallery will continue to display the pieces Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Feb. 8 through March 15.

Santa Fe art gallery manager Kyle Novak said that this exhibit is one-of-a-kind because of the crossover between art and science that will be showcased.

“Personally, I’ve always been drawn to scientific illustration. I think art and illustration play a big role in science-based education and what the museum exhibits,” Novak said.

Novak also looks forward to the 2019 SciArt Meetups and continuing the program next year.

“The SciArt Meetups have allowed artists to come to (the) museum after hours, learn more about science and art and listen to guest speakers who are either scientists or artists themselves,” said Chelsea Collison, Florida Museum educator.

“It’s an awesome opportunity to see some of the artists here in Gainesville. You get to experience natural history of the museum in a different form than when you normally visit and see what inspires other people.”
