The rain and cold weather couldn’t keep Miranda West away from breaking a world record. She and about 50 other local parents attended the Great Cloth Diaper Change on Saturday at Westside Park as they attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the most cloth diapers changed at one time.
The event started with each participant paired with one child. They joined 6,500 people and counting from across the world, trying to break last year’s record of 8,251 diapers. The results from this year will be announced Friday.
West, a 29-year-old Gainesville resident, said she decided to attend the event with her husband and two children, adding the event was a good way to raise awareness about cloth diapers’ positive effect on the environment.
“I get a strange sense of enjoyment seeing diapers on the [clothing] line,” she said.
Michelle Neilson, co-host of the event and co-leader of Cloth Diaper Enthusiasts of Gainesville, said the organization made $222 from raffle tickets and donations. After the organization deducts the cost of the event, it will donate money to the Real Diaper Association, a nonprofit organization that promotes cloth diapering.
