In keeping with her campaign platform, UF Student Body President Christina Bonarrigo kicked off her first Lunch on the Lawn with Bon event Tuesday on the Plaza of the Americas.
About 50 students stopped by for free snow cones and Subway sandwiches, she said.
The event, which was the first of a series of free lunches for students, was aimed at increasing the communication and transparency of SG, Bonarrigo said.
“A lot of the knocks on Student Government is that they don’t know what we do,” she said. “We sit in the third floor, and nobody knows us. So we’re trying to get on the lawn, get to the places where students are most and hear what their concerns are about our campus.”
Paige Verhoeven, an English and psychology senior, said she thinks the lunches are a good idea.
“That’s going to attract attention,” she said. “It’s good that she’s out here talking to people. I don’t how far our comments go as far as action, but it’s good to have a base where you actually listen to the people who are going to school here.”
The next event aimed at SG accessibility is an open house hosted today on the third floor of the Reitz Union, said Sally Cohen, action SG chairwoman. It will run from 9 a.m. until 1p.m.
“There will be a lot of Student Government officials present, so it will be a good opportunity for anyone interested in finding out about Student Government or taking a tour of the office,” Cohen said.
