Students who have had enough of biology and calculus can put away the books and take up bartending.
UF’s Leisure Course Program begins Monday for Summer B, offering hobby, music and sports classes to students and Gainesville residents.
The classes are not graded and do not appear on transcripts, said program coordinator Dianna Lampitt.
Classes offered include guitar, tennis and ballroom dancing.
The classes meet at the Reitz Union or other locations around Gainesville, depending on the subject.
Prices vary for each class.
Bartending is the most popular class and always fills up, Lampitt said.
Some classes require no previous experience, and others are designed for people who want to enhance skills they already have.
About 85 percent of people who enroll in the classes are UF students, Lampitt said.
Twenty-two classes are available during Summer B.
Fall and spring have the highest enrollment with about 500 people per semester.
“We want students to learn something they wouldn’t get in the classroom,” Lampitt said.
Registration for these classes began Monday. Registration runs until the end of next week, depending on the class.
Kim Tuttle, co-owner of Pofahl Studios, said she has been teaching leisure program dance classes for about 30 years.
For Summer B, she is teaching ballet and hip-hop.
The classes, taught at her studio, are combined with classes Tuttle already teaches, she said.
She said the classes are perfect for students who want to dance but don’t have an outlet.
“As long as people want to learn, we’ll teach them,” she said.
