Two people are dead following a car accident Monday morning at the intersection of Southwest 34th Street and Southwest 20th Avenue.
At about 9:52 a.m., Gainesville Police were dispatched to the scene of the crash, in which the driver of a black Hyundai crashed into a blue Honda whose driver was making a U-turn on Southwest 34th Street, according to a press release.
The impact of the collision forced both vehicles to the southwest corner of the intersection. The driver and front-seat passenger of the Honda, 75-year-old Carol M. Ohern and 73-year-old Eugene Ohern respectively, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. The Oherns were from Rockledge, Florida.
Gabrelle Alexander Gibson, the driver — and single occupant — of the Hyundai was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, according to the release. The 25-year-old is expected to survive.
Southwest 34th Street reopened at about 1 p.m., GPD said in a press release.
A full traffic homicide investigation is underway, and it may be six months until the results of the investigation are known.
