First, we would like to send a we-know-we-gave-you-a-hard-time-but-extended-hours-aren't-the-worst-idea-ever LAUREL to UF for the later closing times assigned to the libraries during the week of finals.

We said we didn't see the necessity, and we still don't. Twenty consecutive hours of studying can't be much better than three or four. Everyone's brain has a limit.

We do realize, though, the extended hours may only apply to a certain grateful percentage of students who probably could do without our bemoaning a gift we take for granted. In that sense, we appreciate the fact that our school is looking out for everyone.

Next, we want to give an on-a-scale-of-clever-thinking-to-idiot-you-rank-thoughtless-box-of-rocks DART to hit-and-run drivers all over the world.

What reasoning could someone have for leaving the scene of an accident? Could it be guilt? How about drunkenness? Maybe there's a warrant out for your arrest?

It absolutely does not matter. If you've crashed into someone or something, then lie in the bed you've just made.

UF has lost a student because of a hit-and-run accident. We don't know how much could have been done to help the victim, but deal with the consequences of your actions - don't turn tail.

Next, we would like to give UF a DARTS & LAURELS double portion of contradictory commentary regarding its holiday electronic cards.

UF deserves a thinking-globally-and-acting-locally LAUREL for the cost-effective, earth-friendly nature of e-cards. Considering the effect the economy will have on the holidays, it is difficult to blame UF for saving thousands of dollars by simply switching from paper cards to electronic ones. At the same time, e-cards do not harm the environment, so UF is effectively killing two birds with one stone. We like our wallets, and we like our planet; we would do the same thing.

On the other hand, we have to give UF a but-e-cards-are-so-lame DART for, well, obvious reasons. E-cards have been terrible for a long time, and holiday e-cards were ruined the minute OfficeMax decided to let you ElfYourself. While we see the benefits of the e-card system, we can't help but prefer a heartfelt, hand-written card.

That will do for the final D&L session of this semester. We hope everyone has enjoyed this Editorial Board tradition.

Have a safe weekend, and go Gators.
