About 120 UF students gathered Monday night in the Rion Ballroom to commemorate the end of Islam Awareness Month.
Ammar Al-Shukry of the Al-Maghrib Institute led the ceremony with his speech on college student life and six self-written poems.
After telling an inspirational story in his speech about a visionary in the “march to Medina,” Al-Shukry asked the students about their own visions for the future.
“What is your vision?” Al-Shukry said. “You are writing the story of your life every single day. What do you want your book to say?”
Some students felt really connected to Al-Shukry’s poetry. Zaki Hamad, an electrical engineering senior, was one of those students.
“I liked his last poem the most because when I closed my eyes and he spoke, I could feel the whole atmosphere,” Hamad said.
Ismail Ibn Ali, the president of Islam on Campus at UF, left the ceremony with thought-provoking words.
“The last piece represents you. You are all a part of the puzzle,” he said. “Will you make the mosaic part of you?”
