After seeing my comments in print, I must make this statement because I may have been misinterpreted in the meaning behind my comments to the Alligator.
If anyone feels that my comments contained any animosity or ill-will toward Florida Blue Key, I would respectfully say that is completely false. As stated in the article, I am not angry.
Florida Blue Key is indeed the oldest and most prestigious organization at UF. The organization has and continues to serve the university in myriad facets, uniting leaders throughout the university.
More importantly, I have worked with colleagues and have had friends past and present who have been inducted to Florida Blue Key whom I have had nothing but respect for throughout my UF experience.
The distinction of leadership cannot be created or defined by Florida Blue Key, but it can be recognized and celebrated by it.
The organization was built upon a legacy of leadership and service, which has been the core focus and fundamental accomplishment in its 90 years of existence.
Even though I was not accepted, I can only strive to continue to refine my leadership skills, as any leader would, both in FBK and outside it. Leaders campuswide apply to gain acceptance to the organization, and because of that, membership is extremely competitive.
Undoubtedly, there have been a multitude of prominent leaders on campus and in the nation who have been members of Florida Blue Key; simultaneously, there have been important leaders in both of these spectrums who were not members of Florida Blue Key.
On the other hand, some of my colleagues and friends who made considerable contributions to campus in their leadership were not offered the opportunity to serve in that capacity; it does not diminish their roles or accomplishments on this campus.
It is important to note that many of the current and past members have done great things for the university, and many members of the organization have earned my respect. I wholeheartedly believe it is integral to continue to carry oneself as an effective leader of UF.
Regardless of accolades and organizations, it is most important to me that during my term as Senate president and a leader on campus I maintain my focus on giving back to the students and continually growing as an effective leader in order to best serve the University of Florida.
