The hits keep coming for Florida.
As expected, junior tight end Aaron Hernandez declared Wendesday that he will skip his senior season to enter the NFL Draft.
“It is really special for me to take this first step toward my lifelong dream of playing in the NFL on the fourth anniversary of my father’s passing,” Hernandez said in a press release. “I know he would be proud of not only me, but of my whole family, whose love and support are the only reasons I am where I am today.”
Hernandez led the Gators in receptions (68) and was second on the team in receiving yards (850) and receiving touchdowns (five).
His outstanding year earned him the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end.
The All-American topped his season off with one of his best performances. He had a career-high in receptions (nine) and his second-highest total in yards (111) during Florida’s 51-24 win against Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl.
Cornerback Joe Haden announced earlier in the week he would also be skipping his senior season, and there are still about five UF players considering going pro.
Hernandez could be the toughest to replace. The only other scholarship tight end on the roster is Desmond Parks, who was redshirted this season.
The Gators also tried out freshman quarterback Jordan Reed at tight end this year in practice.
Also, two tight end recruits, Palm Beach Dwyer High’s Gerald Christian and Tampa Blake High’s Michael McFarland, have committed to UF.
