UF employee in serious condition after scooter crash

A UF employee was in serious condition at Shands at UF on Wednesday after she was in an accident while driving her motor scooter Tuesday afternoon.

She was in critical condition after she was first taken to Shands, but is now in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

The accident occurred at about 3:50 p.m., said Cpl. Angelina Valuri, public information officer for the Gainesville Police.

The woman was heading east on Archer Road in front of a man driving a Honda when the drivers got into an accident near the 3100 block of the road, Valuri said.

The front of the man's Honda and back of the woman's scooter were damaged.

The woman was not wearing a helmet, Valuri said.

Police are investigating the accident, and the cause has not yet been determined.

No charges have been filed regarding the crash.

GPD's traffic safety team is conducting a traffic homicide investigation because the crash could potentially result in the woman's death since she is still in serous condition, Valuri said.

The agency did not release the names of either motorist.

After the crash, two of Archer Road's three eastbound lanes were shut down close to the site as police investigated the incident, she said.
