Two amendments up for vote at city elections on March 24

Today is the last day to register to vote in the March 24 City of Gainesville elections.

Two city commission seats, District 1 and At-Large 1, are up for reelection.

In addition, two city charter amendments are on the ballot.

Charter Amendment One would legalize discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Amendment Two would require the city to obtain voter approval for the sale or conversion of land used for conservation, recreation or cultural purposes.

To register to vote, visit VoteAlachua.com or call the Supervisor of Elections at 352-374-5252.

Mail-in voter registration applications must be postmarked by today. And absentee ballots can be obtained through the Web site or the Supervisor of Elections.

Requests to vote by mail are due by March 18.

Voters must be Gainesville residents to participate in city elections.

Pam Carpenter, Alachua County supervisor of elections, said it is particularly important for students to update their registration information if they have moved in or out of city limits.

"It's always important for the students as well to be involved in the local elections," Carpenter said. "They are living here and the rules, the laws, the ordinances are going to impact their lives."
