Letter to the Editor

By Rob Myers, Gainesville resident

Torey Greenwald's letter to the editor on Wednesday was well intentioned but, ultimately, wrong.

The 34th Street Wall commemorating the lives lost to Danny Rolling is no more sacred than anything else posted to the wall by citizens. For many years it has enjoyed an untarnished place on the wall while residents have chosen to respect it.

This appears to not be the case any longer. I know this sentiment may be unpopular, but what do 20-year-old students care about the lives of five people who were struck down while they were infants?

It isn't as though these victims died heroically or valiantly in the process of saving lives or some other equally respectable way.

Should we make a mural to those who were struck down by drunken drivers? Being murdered doesn't warrant an eternal memorial on an ever-changing surface.

The reality is the wall is alive and it is meant for the living. Too long we've tiptoed around the memory of ghosts whose true contribution was nil.

Besides, they've already got their names on those palm trees. Respect them by moving on.
