Former Duke forward Alex Murphy (middle) pulls down a rebound during a game this season against UNC Asheville. Murphy will transfer from Duke to Florida.

The Murphy family tree will continue on at Florida.

Alex Murphy, the younger brother of former Gators forward Erik Murphy, told ESPN on Wednesday that he will transfer to Florida from Duke.

A Wakefield, R.I., native, Murphy also considered Rhode Island, Northeastern and Providence. Unless he can receive a waiver to play immediately, the 6-foot-8, 220-pound redshirt freshman forward will become eligible to play in December 2014.

"I really appreciate the experience at Duke, playing for a Hall of Fame coach in Mike Krzyzewski," Murphy said to ESPN. "I learned a lot as a player and a person.

"I've gotten a chance to know coach [Billy] Donovan and the program. I think it's a great fit for me to continue my career. I think they can help me develop as a player – and that I can help them a lot as well."

After suffering a concussion in the preseason of his first year at Duke, Murphy played sparingly and redshirted. Before announcing his intent to transfer on Dec. 5, he averaged a point and a rebound during 6.6 minutes per game in five contests this season.

The addition of Murphy should help Florida, which loses frontcourt players Patric Young, Will Yeguete and Casey Prather to graduation after this season. UF has not signed any power forwards or centers yet in its 2014 recruiting class.
