At around 8 p.m. on Tuesday a female UF student was mugged on the 800 block of SW 9th.
The 20-year-old was walking alone, when an unarmed mugger demanded she hand over her laptop and iPhone, according to Sgt. Michael Douglas of the Gainesville Police Department.
After stealing the items, the mugger ran from the victim. The victim went back to her house before calling police, leading to a 15-minute lag time before they were able to respond to the incident. The police are working leads, but as of Tuesday night no arrest had been made.
Douglas said the GPD emphasizes that lone females need to pay careful attention to their surroundings at night. He also said any victim of a crime should go to the closest telephone possible to contact police immediately.
