More than a dozen local restaurants are selling burgers and fries at a discounted price next week.
Gainesville’s third annual Burger Week, offered by the smartphone app Gift Certificates and More, will run from Monday to Sunday and offer $5 meals. This year, new restaurants like Gator’s Dockside, World of Beer and Backstreet Blues Oyster House are joining in.
“We wanted to do it for two reasons,” said Edward Lavagnino, the founder and president of the app. “We wanted to give back to the community...and it’s also good publicity for the restaurants.”
Lavagnino said to get the deal people must download the app and create a free account.
“They get a really good discount on a great burger from 13 different restaurants,” he said. “This is a great way for them to save a lot of money.”
Praveen Varanasi, 21, said he doesn’t support the app because it promotes products that are not economically and environmentally sustainable.
“I don’t think it’s good for our society to continue the consumption of these sort of products,” the UF economics, political science and sustainability studies junior said.
Varanasi said he has been a vegetarian all his life and vegan for three years. He said he would support the app if it offered more vegan-friendly options.
“I think that if they give more of an effort and advertise more vegetarian or vegan businesses or healthy alternatives, then they’d definitely get more of a following,” he said.
