A Palestinian interests club is changing up its events for its second annual Palestinian People’s Week.

UF Students for Justice in Palestine kicked off the week on Monday with a Palestinian culture fair.

“This year, we’re focusing more on cultural aspects of Palestinian culture,” said club president, Tesneem Shraiteh.

The organization primarily focuses on the politics of Palestine, but uses this week to inform others about their culture too, said Farah Khan, vice president of external affairs for Students for Justice in Palestine.

“We want to humanize Palestinians because they are systematically dehumanized and degraded in the media,” said Khan, a 20-year-old UF English junior.

The organization will host a culture fashion show tonight with the Arabic Student Union.

Other events during the week include a Wednesday vigil for all the lives lost during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a demonstration for Hands off Al Aqsa on Thursday.

Al Aqsa is a Jerusalem mosque that the Israelis have limited access to. The mosque is only open to men over the age of 50, Khan said.

Khan said the week’s events will highlight Palestinian culture.

“We want to show people their art, music, literature, their forms of expression and their food too,” Khan said.
