It's about to become even easier to find porn online.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers approved a new top-level domain registry, ".xxx," for adult sites June 25.
It has been toying with the controversial domain since 2005.
Supporters argue that this will make it easier to filter adult content. One company, ICM Registry was instrumental in the final decision.
According to its website, ICM worked for the past six years gathering support.
"It's been a long time coming," said chairman Stuart Lawley. "This is great news."
But not everyone is excited to see the barely legal domain in action. Mike Strother, a 20-year veteran of the adult industry, is calling shenanigans.
"This government has been trying to circumvent the First Amendment in terms of the adult industry for years," Strother said.
He said this will lead to confusion. If someone owns "sex.com" and another person owns "sex.net," who gets the rights to "sex.xxx?" Not to mention, who gets to decide what counts as adult material?
"It is a tool for censorship," he said. "It makes it too easy for a government to say ‘If you're on an adult site, you need a ".xxx" domain.'"
