I can recount a number of times of reading the Victoria’s Secret summer swimsuit catalogue and weeping and being amazed at the same time. How are these women this flawless? Do they not eat? Do they live at the gym? These are questions that pop up in my mind as I’m adding swimsuits to my wish list.
The fashion industry likes to pretend that their models aren’t suffering mental abuse and that they eat relatively healthy. Refinery29 posted a picture of models at fashion week holding big bags full of McDonald’s burgers and fries. I have to use my own judgment and say for women who are getting their paychecks based off of how skinny they can get to fit into a dress is most certainly not eating McDonald’s that much. Hey, they might have even just posed with the bags just to get the media off their backs.
The Huffington Post wrote an article on the new eating trend of models. Bria Murphy revealed that she has seen other models dipping cotton balls into orange juice to feel full without consuming the calories. That sounds more like the beloved fashion industry we all know.
Now, I have all sorts of new questions popping up into my mind. My first is why? And my second is how does your body digest cotton?
Well, my first question has a no-brainer answer, but my food-loving mind can’t wrap my brain around that concept.
Marissa Lippert, diet and nutritionist at Nourish NYC answers my second question, “because cotton is not meant to be digested, it could be harmful to their esophagus and intestinal tract.”
Eating cotton balls can also cause constipation and cause the body to go into starvation mode, which will slow down the metabolism.
Anyone hungry for a bowl of cotton balls yet?
If this trend catches fire we could start seeing some bloated bellies in the next Victoria’s Secret swimsuit catalogue.
We can only hope. Then we can all stop weeping over those amazing bods or the great Photoshop skills from the editors.
