With six days to spare until Valentine’s Day, UF student Steffi Baer picked up a blind date at Library West on Wednesday.

“Who needs Blockbuster when I have Library West?” the finance and political science freshman said.

For the first time, the library is offering students a “blind date” with a book or DVD for Valentine’s Day.

On the second-floor, an assortment of movies and novels decorated in pink and red wrapping paper lay waiting for students to check out. Each has a tag describing it’s genre and clues to it’s plot.

April Hines, the journalism and mass communications librarian, said she started the project Tuesday with the UF Library West Student Ambassadors and the UF Hooked to the Book Club.

“We’ve been frantically kind of restocking and trying to find new titles and wrapping books and DVDs,” Hines said.

More than 45 people have gone on a “date” with one of the items, so the library had to restock, she said.

Hines said if she can keep up with the high demand, she wants to give out “blind dates” until Valentine’s Day. The event may become an annual one because of its success.

Baer’s date, with a heart-shaped label that hinted at action, bank robberies and magicians, is the movie “Now You See Me.”The 18-year-old plans to spend Valentine’s Day watching a marathon of movies with a group of about 15 friends.

“I thought it was a cute idea and I love unwrapping presents,” she said.
