A Gainesville man fired six shots downtown early Monday morning, one of them hitting a bystander’s hand.
The incident took place in front of Paramount Grill on Southwest First Avenue, according to a police report.
At about 2 a.m., the suspected shooter, 31-year-old Derrick Keith Godbolt, argued with several people in front of the restaurant, according to the report. Police said he then pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun and fired down the street.
Some of the bullets struck Venerable Armstrong III in the hand, according to the report. He suffered severe but non-life threatening injuries.
The attack happened near a crowd of people near city lot 10, a parking lot just off West University Avenue, according to the report.
As Godbolt attempted to escape in a car, police stopped him near the intersection of Southwest First Street and Southwest First Avenue, according to the report.
A witness identified Godbolt as the shooter and police arrested him for aggravated assault with great bodily harm and resisting arrest without violence, according to the report.
Authorities took him to the Alachua County Jail where, as of press time, he remains in lieu of a $510,000 bond.
