Former Florida point guard Andrew Nembhard announced his decision Tuesday to transfer to Gonzaga.
The 6-foot-5 sophomore from Canada spent his first two seasons with UF, starting all 67 games to begin his career. He decided in May to enter the transfer portal after averaging 11.2 points, 5.6 assists and 3.0 rebounds en route to a COVID-19-shortened 19-12 season.
While he eventually settled on spending his final two years of eligibility at Gonzaga, Nembhard also considered Duke, Stanford, Georgetown, Memphis and USC as potential landing spots.
He will have to sit out the 2020-21 season before suiting up for the Bulldogs.
One of the main reasons Ontario’s own settled on Gonzaga was the chance to start. While the team was able to lure top-10 recruit Jalen Suggs to start at point guard, he will most likely end up being a one-and-done player. That will clear the way for Nembhard to be the floor general in 2021.
While Nembhard’s departure hurts Florida, the Gators have a few options at guard to replace the former SEC All-Freshman selection. Tre Mann, who averaged 5.3 points, 0.7 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game as a freshman, is one direction they could go if he withdraws from the NBA Draft. The Gators also have Cleveland State transfer Tyree Appleby and sophomore Ques Glover at their disposal to fill the hole in their frontcourt.
