A campus environmental group is giving the public a chance to help the community one pair of jeans at a time.
UF GreenLaw, a student-run organization, is collecting jean pants and jackets until Oct. 31. The organization is participating in Volcom's Give Jeans A Chance campaign, and all donations will go to the St. Francis House, said Chelsea Sims, the organization's president.
The campaign, which kicked off Sept. 1, is part of Volcom's Give Back Series, and its mission is to raise awareness and funds for people-based issues, said Floris Gierman, Volcom's senior director for retail marketing.
Volcom is an American clothing manufacturer that targets youth who surf, snowboard and skateboard, according to the brand's website. It's distinguished by its logo - the Volcom stone.
GreenLaw has the opportunity to win a $1,500 grant from Volcom, and if it were to win the money, the funds would be given to a charity of the organization's choice, Gierman said.
The campaign is in its third consecutive year. The first year it collected about 5,000 pairs of jeans worldwide, and about 20,000 pairs were collected the second year, Gierman said.
Because previous years were successful, the campaign is raising this year's international goal to 50,000 pairs. The program is running in more than 300 stores worldwide, and it has designated Friday as the "International Give Jeans a Chance Day," in order to raise awareness, Gierman said. The official drop-off site is located at 250 Bruton-Geer Hall in the law school. Individuals can contact Sims at c.sims925@gmail.com to arrange a drop-off.
