UPDATE: The charges filed against Chandler Thomas Haines were dropped on March 27. No additional charges were filed.
A UF student was arrested early Friday morning and told police he stole a co-worker’s driver’s license and debit card to buy beer, University Police said.
Chandler Thomas Haines, 20, was outside of Graham Hall at about 2:35 a.m. when he told officers his name was the co-worker's. The officer, who had found a wallet on the ground at the scene, looked in the wallet and found Haines’ driver’s license, as well as a debit card that belonged to the co-worker, according to an arrest report.
After the officer read Haines his Miranda rights, Haines admitted he gave a fake name. He also said he stole the debit card and driver’s license from his co-worker while they were at work, according to the report.
He used the stolen driver’s license and debit card to purchase beer fewer than three times, he told police. Haines said the co-worker was unaware he was in possession of his drivers licence and debit card, according to the report.
Haines is a student at UF, according to the UF directory.
Haines was arrested on two counts of fraudulent impersonation and theft. He was taken to Alachua County Jail where he was released on his own recognizance Saturday morning.
Haines declined to comment.
