Former UF swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte set a new American reocrd in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday at the USA Short Course National Championships with a time of 1:40.08.
Lochte beat out second-place finisher and fewllow Olympian Michael Phelps by over a second and broke the record by almost half a second.
In addition to Lochte, Bradley Ally finished 15th at the event and Clark Burckle and Shaune Fraser finished 18th and 19th, respectively.
The women were led by senior All-America Caroline Burckle, who finished sixth overall in the event. Junior Laurabeth Guenthner finished 21st.
The Gators socred 45 points and are in fourth place after the first day of the two-day event.
