Grab your beanbags and strap on your headgear.
This spring, UF will add two new competitions to its intramural lineup: a wrestling meet and a cornhole tournament.
Cornhole is a beanbag toss most often seen while tailgating.
Players earn points by throwing their beanbags into the cutout holes on an opposing team's raised board, said Jon Broska, UF Recreational Sports' assistant director for intramural sports.
A staff member pointed out its popularity among students and suggested it be added to the intramural program. Participants in the tournament will form two-person teams, Broska said.
Kate Quinlan, a graduate assistant, said that while it is not a traditional sport, she believes a lot of students will want to participate.
"I think the students that might not want to ever play intramurals but like to tailgate and play cornhole will come out for it," Quinlan said.
The cornhole tournament will take place Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Southwest Recreation Center.
Broska said the wrestling meet was added after students expressed interest in the sport and questioned why intramurals didn't offer it.
Students will be divided into weight classes to compete, and then a single-elimination tournament in each weight class will take place. Both male and female competitors can participate as teams or as individuals, Broska said. Quinlan said the meets will be similar to high school meets.
"It will be a matter of accommodating as many students as we can while still staying consistent with high school rules," Quinlan said.
The wrestling meet will be held Feb. 15 at the Southwest Recreation Center. The two new events will each be held on Fridays, a departure from the traditional Sunday through Thursday intramural schedule.
Broska said the events fall in line with the university's goal of providing alternative activities for students on Friday nights.
"The beauty is that right now there is no opportunity to do that type of competition on a Friday night," Broska said. "It's just having another day of the week to come in and find something athletic or fun to do."
