Tuition increase bill passed by Legislature, sent to Gov. Scott

The Florida Legislature has approved a bill that would allow UF and Florida State University to raise tuition more than 15 percent a year.

The Florida Senate passed the bill Thursday morning, and it will now go to Gov. Rick Scott.

Under the bill, universities meeting 11 of 14 criteria would be allowed to raise tuition past the current 15 percent cap. UF currently meets those standards.

Gov. Rick Scott has said that he does not support tuition increases, saying universities should cut costs.

It is unclear whether he will sign the bill.
