A Gainesville man surrendered to officers early Friday morning after allegedly killing a former UF student driving a scooter and fleeing the scene.
Gainesville Police Department officers responded to a hit-and-run Thursday night at 300 SW 34th St., where they found one man, UF alumnus Andy Gil, lying in the roadway. Gil was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead, according to a GPD social media post.
Witnesses said a silver BMW rear-ended the scooter at a high rate of speed and fled the scene while dragging the scooter underneath it. The scooter was lodged under the car until 3400 W University Ave., where it was later found.
Officers tracked the car and license plate to the home of 36-year-old Clovis McNair.
GPD issued commands to McNair through a loudspeaker and dispatched the SWAT and Negotiations Response Team to the scene, according to the post.
At 5:30 a.m. Friday, nearly seven hours into the standoff, McNair told SWAT members through a window he would surrender. A woman exited the home along with McNair, who was arrested for the felony hit-and-run charge.
Gil, 22, graduated from UF in May 2023 with a psychology degree and leaves behind four siblings, according to a GoFundMe page started by his mother.
McNair is currently being held at the Alachua County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
