UF President Bernie Machen will be returning to the office today after spending the last three days in Washington, D.C.
Machen was in the capital lobbying for more federal funds, discussing the economic stimulus package with lawmakers and meeting with the FBI.
The primary purpose of the trip was to seek funding for UF projects that might not see state dollars because of the state's budget crunch, said UF spokesman Steve Orlando.
"We're looking at all other possibilities," Orlando said.
The projects include research on breast cancer, citrus diseases, aging, alternative fuels and rehabilitation techniques for soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Machen was also getting a sense from lawmakers on how much UF might receive from the $800 billion-plus economic stimulus package before the U.S. Senate.
On Wednesday, Machen met with the FBI during the quarterly meeting of the National Security Higher Education Advisory Board, appointed in 2005 to foster communication and cooperation between higher education and the bureau on issues like terrorism and counterintelligence.
At the meeting, Machen discussed his recent trip to Iran, Orlando said.
