As they clean before Winter Break, people can donate gently used clothes and items today.
The UF Office of Sustainability will hold its Collection Day today from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the northwest corner of the Stephen C. O’Connell Center parking lot.
Items collected will be donated to organizations such as Haven Hospice, UF’s Field and Fork Pantry, Alachua County Tools For Schools and the Alachua County Hazardous Waste Collection Center.
Clothing and household items such as nonperishable foods, school supplies and toys will be donated, said Allison Vitt, the outreach and communications coordinator for the UF Office of Sustainability.
Hazardous and electronic waste will also be collected and safely disposed of.
This event is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to get rid of unwanted items in an environmentally sound way, she said.
“A lot of people throw these into landfill, and it’s hazardous because the items have heavy metals that could leak into the water system,” Vitt said.
Haven Hospice and the Alachua County Hazardous Waste Collection Center will be on-site to collect items and answer questions, she said.
Sharon C. Blansett, the assistant to the associate vice president for Student Affairs at UF Housing and Residence Education, wrote in an email that she is planning on donating paint.
“I already sent my husband the notice about this event,” she said. “It’s one of the many ways I prod him to clean the garage!”
