Florida’s secondary depth took another hit on Monday when defensive back Brian Edwards announced his intention to transfer.
Edwards, who was entering his junior year at UF, posted his decision on Twitter.
“Unfortunately, I will be entering the transfer portal and looking to further my education and athletic ability elsewhere,” he said. “This was a very tough decision for me.”
Edwards’ decision comes after a tumultuous offseason. He was arrested in May for a misdemeanor charge of simple battery following an alleged incident in which he grabbed his girlfriend by the neck. Those charges were dropped in June due to insufficient evidence, but Edwards was still on suspension from the team.
Edwards will be the ninth Florida football player and second defensive back to transfer this offseason. His decision puts added pressure on a cornerback unit that already lost four-star recruit Chris Steele to the transfer portal.
The loss of Edwards is one the team should be able to withstand, however. He played sparingly last season, registering seven tackles, four pass breakups and one fumble recovery in eight games. He did not figure to be a key player this year.
Barring an appeal, he will have to sit out the upcoming season at his new school due to NCAA transfer rules.
