I was surprised to read Monday's editorial - the writer was unwilling to learn in a place "where students can carry weapons along with their laptops."

I suppose, then, by inference that this person is unwilling to go to the movie theaters in Gainesville, the mall or Wal-Mart. In all these places and many more, people can legally carry a firearm if they have a concealed-carry license.

Since I highly doubt that the Alligator staffers are hermits, it must be that the writer was not informed about the places where citizens can, and do, carry firearms for self-defense.

The irony of the editorial is that the writer was critical of UF's response time.

But if you had one person legally carrying a concealed weapon, the response time could be close to zero. The reality is that "gun-free" campuses are actually "sitting-duck" campuses.
