Despite the heat, about 2,500 students packed into the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Tuesday, donning jackets, dress pants or knee-length skirts in hopes of landing those prospective jobs or internships.

The showcase has been a regular event in the Fall and Spring since the 1980s, said Angel Iverson, assistant director for career events.

Iverson said the number of employers this year has increased to 284 corporations from 265 last fall.

"I'm seeing more diverse opportunities for students," Iverson said. "In the past, the majority of students were business and engineering students."

Opportunities are available in sales, marketing, business, engineering, IT, healthcare, banking, advertising and agriculture.

Psychology senior Ilexis Elba, 21, said she's not sure exactly what career path she wants to take but expects the showcase to give her some insight.

Accounting firm recruiter Ed Cranford, of Orlando-based Averett Warmus Durkee Osburn Henning, said it's imperative students dress the part.

"Appearance makes a difference," said Cranford, 35. "I expect the students who are serious about getting a job with us to dress professionally, especially at a nationally recognized university."

The Career Showcase is sponsored by UF's Career Resource Center and will also be held today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the O'Connell Center.
