A man was taken to Alachua County Jail early Thursday morning on a charge of driving under the influence after he missed a curve and hit a boulder, knocking it into the road.

Brandon Kyle Hanson, 29, of 8413 SW Fourth Place, crashed into the lime rock boulder at about 2 a.m., said Cpl. Angelina Valuri, public information officer for the Gainesville Police Department.

Hanson was driving west down Northwest Eighth Avenue and missed the curve near the intersection of West Newberry Road, she said.

At the scene, it appeared that Hanson then drove into the lot of Corda-Roy's Originals store at 5310 NW Eighth Ave.

A tow truck moved the boulder out of the road.

Hanson refused to take a breath test, but because he showed signs of alcohol impairment, he had to take sobriety tests, Valuri said.

When Hanson failed them, GPD officer Steven Carter arrested him.

Judge Thomas Jaworski allowed his release from jail between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday, according to the Alachua County Sherriff's Office Department of the Jail.
