As a heterosexual female, facing my gay best friend after Amendment 2 declared him inferior ruined my post-election celebrations. What am I supposed to say, "Better luck next time"? Unfortunately, this isn't an Ole Miss game.

We live in a state that looks down on him. We question his ability to fight in a war and raise a family. We deny his ability to love, but not his ability to pay taxes.

Most disturbing is the lack of concern on campus. Where is the outrage? They might as well have just said, "Enough already. The gays lost. Stop talking about it."

To you I respond: This is a civil rights issue, and we won't stop until we see a civil rights movement.

This is the time when all lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender and queer activists should evaluate their strategies. We're not fighting for gay marriage, and we're not asking any specific group to socially accept homosexuality. We are simply fighting for equal rights under the law for everyone.

After drying my eyes, I finally have an answer for my gay best friend and for any other LGBTQ person or ally: After more than 50 years of activism, this year we saw history unfold as a black American did what was once unthinkable.

Now, it's our turn.
