Gainesville’s first Greatest Garage Sale draws diverse crowd

Eager vendors and shoppers braved blustery winds Saturday to attend Gainesville’s Greatest Garage Sale at the Gainesville Regional Airport’s southeast field.

The event was the airport’s new charity event to help raise money for the March of Dimes.

Laura Aguiar, the airport spokeswoman, said she was “very pleased” with the turnout and the amount of money raised.

More than $1,300 was raised from vendors leasing spaces, she said.

“It’s good to see other residents from smaller communities such as High Springs and Williston coming out,” Aguiar said.

At 7 a.m., about 80 vendors arrived to set up tables to display their wares.

The items varied from yellow wooden clogs and shiny green vases to gently used electronics and old books.

While some vendors own antique shops, others like Krista Sturtz attended just to make a little extra money.

As shoppers looked through her handmade jewelry and fur coats, Sturtz said she liked the event’s welcoming atmosphere.

“I think there’s a nice variety of stuff out here, and people are pretty friendly,” she said.

Eric Proctor, a 20-year-old UF electrical engineering junior, said he decided to come to the event after hearing about it from a friend.

Proctor, who said he likes to crank up his TV volume when watching “Dexter,” was excited to find a large speaker for his living room.

He said looking through the unique items was worth the trip.

“It’s cool that some people brought their homemade items,” Proctor said. “There’s a good mix of hobbies out here.”
