Gainesvillista: How to clean your makeup brushes

As far as beauty routines go, washing makeup brushes is my least favorite.

Since washing brushes can be such a lengthy process, I sometimes avoid doing it altogether. This can eventually lead to damaged brushes as well as breakouts, and no one wants that!

I’ve recently found two household items that work brilliantly at deep cleaning makeup brushes and keeps them soft for years to come.

Dish soap and olive oil may seem like an odd combination, but stick with me. The result is better than any fancy brush cleanser I’ve used in the past and is a fraction of the price.

Pour about a tablespoon of olive oil and dish soap onto a plate. After running your brush under warm water, dip it into the soap mixture and wash the brush in the palm of your hand. Rinse your brushes well with clean, warm water before setting them aside to dry overnight.

The oil works at breaking down stubborn formulas of makeup (like foundation and cream products), and the soap eliminates any dirt and leftover makeup.

Bonus: The olive oil also acts as a natural conditioner for your brushes and leaves them feeling better than when you first bought them!

If you want to get really fancy, you can also add some scented oil to the soap mixture. Lavender and peppermint scents both work nicely for this and make putting on your makeup even more enjoyable in the mornings.

Happy cleaning!
