Between 2013 and 2014, UF gave more engineering bachelor’s degrees to women than any other college in the state.
The College of Engineering announced Thursday it gave 271 engineering bachelor’s degrees to women. The University of Central Florida awarded 156, and Florida International University awarded 124.
Emily Huber, the president of UF’s Society of Women Engineers, said she wasn’t surprised by the statistic. She said there are 60 to 70 active members in her organization.
Huber, a UF mechanical and aerospace engineering senior, said she decided to become an engineer because of her love for math and science, which started at a young age. The 21-year-old said she hopes more women pursue careers in engineering.
“Don’t be intimidated by the classes you have to take,” she said. “Math and science are difficult but definitely meaningful once you master a specific subject.”
Jennifer Andrew, an assistant professor of engineering, wrote in an email that women are a minority among engineering majors.
Andrew said students should look for a career that makes them happy.
“Find something that you really enjoy and that you are passionate about,” she said.
